Alvin Kamara RB TENN

Coming out of High School in 2013, Kamara was a 4 star recruit who originally committed to Alabama before transferring over to Tennessee. He signed at Bama and played his freshman season there but was suspended twice and did not travel with the team during the Sugar Bowl. He didn’t see any time on the field as a freshman on a team that had Derrick Henry, TJ Yeldon, Kenyon Drake, and recruited Altee Tenpenny the same season. After his freshman season at Bama he transferred to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas and played his 2014 there before his move to Tennessee.

Kamara was ranked by ESPN as the #4 RB of the class and was their 32ND Overall prospect coming out of Norcross High School in Georgia. He was listed at 5’10” and 192pounds. His HS SPARQ test results list his at a 4.55 40 – Yard dash, a 4.28 20 – Yard shuttle, 39.1 inch Vertical and a 116.13 SPARQ Score. A pretty phenomenal athlete coming out of High School. You know where in his senior season he posted 2,264 yards and 26 touchdowns while winning the Mr Football Award.

In that freshman season at Bama during training camp Kamara suffered a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery. One of those suspensions that Kamara was punished with while recovering from injury was for a “behavior reason” according to Coach Saban. The second was during the Sugar Bowl but no reasons seem to have been given for that. On Feb 16TH 2014, while he was in his hometown, Kamara was arrested for driving on a suspended license and spent a short time in jail. Checking through the internet it appears that after Hutchinson, Kamara kept himself out of trouble and seems to have turned himself around.

Kamara played 9 games for Hutchinson Community College where on 172 carries he put up 1253 total rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. He put up a 7.3 Yards Per Carry average with a longest run of 71 yards. He also caught 18 passes for a total of 224 yards and 3 TDs. In 2015 Kamara carried 107 times for 698 yards and 7 TDs with a 6.5YPC average. He also caught 34 passes for 291 yards and put in another 3 TDs through the air.  His 2016 season at Tennessee he carried 103 times for 596 yards and 9 TDs while catching another 40 passes for 392 yards and 4 more scores. Kamara did have an injured left knee which was reported to have been a sprain involving the LCL and meniscus during the 2016 season. Two knee injuries in his college isn’t anything major but keep an eye on draft capital and how it might impact where he is selected during the NFL draft.

Combine info – Kamara showed up at the combine and measured in at 5’10” and 214 lbs. He has massive arm length at the RB position with 32 ¾inch arms which are in the 94 percentile at the position. In the 40 Yard Dash he ran a 4.56s which while not great isn’t terrible. In the vertical jump he posted a very strong 39.5 inches while also leaping to a 131 inch broad jump. It’s impressive that Kamara put on a solid 20 lbs to his frame coming out of HS and maintained his speed and explosive profile. He hit a solid 15 reps on his bench press. A number you’d like to see a little higher but nothing that should impact his draft stock. When you take a look at his measureables on Player Profiler you see a 99 speed score which is 55TH percentile and a monster 132.7 burst score; which measures a player’s explosiveness with the vertical and broad jump. That score put Kamara in the 94TH percentile for burst.

Things to like – Kamara has that size and speed you would like to see in a NFL RB. He’s a competitive runner who rarely wastes energy needlessly stretching out plays looking for the homerun TD. Takes the yards that are available without stretching out the play horizontally. Kamara shows great flexibility and superior lower body balance. With his talent as a pass catcher he can play on all three downs. Shows an ability to be on the field on third down in pass protection and can square up on blitzers. Flexed out at a WR and caught passes from different levels. Is able to create yards by changing his speed and uses that flexibility to get defenders off balance and the power to take advantage of it. That powerful lower body is on display as he can flip to top speed quickly when the lane develops.

Cons – Coming out of Tennessee in the 6 clips that I was able to watch of him everything is out of shotgun. I don’t think I once saw him line up in a traditional NFL formation, however, this isn’t truly a con as many NFL teams are running more shotgun. His game against Virginia Tech was a bit of a poor showing. He does bring a nice receiving TD during this game but that is more of the defender losing track as he collided with another defender leaving Kamara the check down wide open. Kamara did make a nice move into the end zone on that play. On the 2ND and 3RD level at times for as good as he looks at setting up blocks he will needlessly run into the tackle or takes a poor angle. Again the two knee injuries could be a red flag but not overly worried as he had a low number of carries. He also had two phenomenal games against Kentucky and Vanderbilt with the knee brace on after the sprain.

Buzz on Kamara has been building and I even heard mention that he could be the first running back off the board during the NFL Draft. I still think that Fournette or Cook are going 1-2 off the board but after watching Kamara I think he has the ability and talent to step up. His vision and elusiveness combined with lower body flexibility and power make him one of the better backs this year. Kamara has the chance to make a huge difference on your fantasy roster this year and you need to be plugged in to where he goes and how the summer plays out for him.


Dynasty RB Paul Perkins UCLA

Coming out of High School in 2012, Perkins was a 3 star recruit out of Arizona and was listed at 5’10” 180 pounds. The 2012 class has some talent as I talked about in my Jonathan Williams article. Perkins isn’t likely to be a twenty carry a game type back. I doubt his body could handle that workload but he could be a good tandem back if he lands on the right team.

Perkins put up decent numbers his two years as a starter in 2015 and 2014. In 2014 he had 1575 yards on 251 attempts for a 6.3 yard per carry while in 2015 he put up 1343 yards on 237 carries for a 5.7ypc. In 2014 he had 9 touchdowns and in 2015 he had 14. His first year getting playing time in 2013 Perkins posted 573 yards on 134 carries. I will talk about Perkins lack of breakaway speed, but in 2014 he had a long run of 92 yards and in 2015 he had one of 82 yards. He also showed skills in the receiving game each year posting around 25 caught balls and about 250 yards through the air.

Combine info – Perkins measured in at 5103 or about 5’10” weighing in at 208lbs. So he packed on about 30 pounds of mass during his time at UCLA. That shows work ethic and dedication. It’s also not easy to put on that size and maintain speed and agility. Arm length measured in at 31 5/8” and he had 9” hands. He ran a 4.54 40 yard dash with a 1.62 10 yard. It was odd that he did not perform in the short shuttle or the 3 cone. His agility should be one of his strengths on tape but maybe wasn’t testing well. Perkins had a 32 inch vertical and a 124 inch broad jump. So he shows some explosion in the broad jump that didn’t translate into the vertical. Perkins did 19 reps on the bench press.

Things to like – Perkins shows some really good hands as a receiver. He is not a body catcher and does a nice job focusing in on the ball. Shows ability to catch balls thrown behind him and those that are placed high/low. In the bowl game against Nebraska you see his ability to really watch the ball in during a screen where he ends up getting blown up as he receives the ball. Never takes his eyes off. He will do well in swings and screen passes at the NFL level. His lower body strength and agility allows him to get through the trash at the line and his initial burst gets him past that first level of defense. He shows great lateral quickness when he needs to break a run outside or when cutting back to find a running lane. His Stanford run shows all of this as at the initial point of attack a Stanford LB is there to meet him. Perkins quickly sidesteps him goes over another defender at the line, cuts back and bounces it out and up the field. His plus Vision, balance and agility all flash on that play. Shows a good stutter step and change of direction with quick footwork. He does a very nice job setting up defenders in the open field and juking them.

Cons – Needs to play behind his pads in pass pro. He shows a willingness to take on defenders but gets knocked down when doing so, though he still slows the pass rush. Needs to learn to chop defenders low as blocker at his size. I didn’t notice any fumbles but he gets an arm swing that puts the ball away from his body at times. He lacks breakaway speed. Perkins game tape looks a lot slower than the 4.54 forty that he put on display at the NFL combine. He is a lot quicker than he is fast. It’s not a bad thing but it’s going to limit his ability to create at the next level. This also affects his ability to create separation in pass routes.

Perkins is going to be best suited to go to teams with Gap and Zone run schemes. He is a patient runner who lets blocks forms and has great vision to find primary or cut back lanes. His lateral agility and initial burst allows him to make the first defender miss though a lack of a second gear to breakaway in the open field limits big play potential. This also limits his ability to separate from defenders when running routes. Look for Perkins likely to be a day 3 pick. I doubt he becomes an every down back but in the Running Back By Committee world of the NFL he has a place as a good running back option.

Dynasty RB Jonathan Williams Arkansas


Jonathan Williams RB Arkansas

Coming out of High School in 2012, Williams was a 4 star recruit out of the state of Texas and was listed as a 6’ 200 pound back. The 2012 RB class has already given us Todd Gurley and TJ Yeldon and Williams is listed in many publications as a top 20 back of that class.

As a sophomore he put up 900 yards on 150 carries averaging about 6 ypc and scored 4 TDs. As a junior he put 1190 yards on 211 carries at a 5.6 ypc and posted 12 TDs. A large chunk of this production came in his game against Texas Tech which might be where we saw the top tier of Williams putting together all the traits that made him such an intriguing prospect.

With the help of fantastic sites like DraftBreakdown and a few youtube videos I was able to catch about six games of Williams’ 2014 season. He missed the 2015 season due to a foot injury that required surgery. So pay close attention to that during the lead up to the draft and then during preseason. Rust can be expected as he gets back on the field and has to adjust to NFL game speed.

Combine info – Willaims measured in at 5106 or about 5’11” weighing in at 220lbs. His arm length was 31 5/8” and he had 10” hands (ball security, reminder that Derrick Henry has tiny little hands). He didn’t participate in any of the events other than the bench press where he put up 16 reps. Sounds like he posted a 4.55 40yd dash at the Arkansas pro day. He did not complete the Vertical Jump or Broad Jump which would’ve been nice indications of his explosiveness. His 3 cone drill was timed at 6.97 which is the same number posted at the NFL combine as Kenneth Dixon.

Things to like – Williams has a great ability to plant his foot and go. Numerous times in his tape you can see him cut and get his speed going. While watching him, rarely do you see the first man take him down. Constantly he is bouncing off that first tackler and gaining a few extra yards. It takes a gang tackle to bring him down. He also flashes a good spin move that he used from time to time. He uses his body well to set up runs. His Texas Tech game might be the upside film for Williams. In the game he gets a handoff to the left side gets past the linebackers and as he’s coming up on safety he plants fakes and the safety is left grasping air as Williams kicks that gear back and splits the safety for the TD. Against Bama, one of the top level defenses, he also flashed this planting and leaving the safety grasping. Williams has good speed for a big back, great change of gears with his start stop ability and when he runs hard great physical running style. He flashes a good jump cut and has an ability to keep his feet moving without having to come to a complete stop. Williams is a very smooth athlete who gets up to speed quick and has a good balance to him. He might not be as polished as a pass blocker but he shows a willingness to take on defenders and cuts rushers really well. He also shows good hands though he wasn’t used much in the passing game. This should help keep him on the field on all three downs.

Cons – One thing I noticed from time to time was Williams holding the ball out from his body. I didn’t see it lead to any fumbles but it’s something that could be taken advantage of by defenders at the NFL level. For a physical running back he is a bit of an upright runner. I’d like to see him lower his pad level more which should lead to more broken tackles with his size and speed. When he hesitates and dances behind the line that upright style leads to loss of yards. Tried to bounce it outside one too many times when that didn’t seem to fit his best skill set. When he bounced the ball at and tried to stretch it to the outside it looked like there was hesitation to plant and just get what he could, although his lateral explosive ability looked good. I would like to have seen him do the vertical and broad jump to see his explosive ability in his legs. Those numbers are going to show the strength in his legs and if he can punish defenders when he lowers the shoulder.

Williams is a guy to be excited about. He flashes some really strong ability. He isn’t going to be a day one NFL pick but is someone to keep an eye on. Looks like in rookie dynasty drafts he is going around the third round right now which could be a real steal when you look back. Keep an eye on where he goes on draft day and then closely monitor his health during training camp and what he is doing in the preseason games.

ABs from “The U”


Growing up and being a “gym rat”, I’ve read over and done a million different weight training programs. I’ve read countless magazines hyping this program or that program. Been in numerous gyms to see this fad program and that fad program. But one staple routine I’ve always been a fan of comes from an all-time great RB, Edge James.

If you’ve ever seen this program you’ll know it’s a great one. Its eleven different exercises (some repeated) a total of 250 reps. Now, if I remember correctly, skill position players at “The U” were required to complete this workout in under 7 minutes. So for the beginners that try this, just aim for completing the routine. For the more advanced groups, get under that time and during subsequent workouts try and beat your time.

Some of this requires equipment but it can all easily be done with just body weight and without equipment. Heck it’s a workout within itself just that way. For things like “Hyperextensions” just lay down prone on your stomach and do “supermans” (lifting your upper body and legs simultaneously). Go out have fun and remember to warm up before exercise.

  1. Lateral Sit-ups (20 reps): Lie on your right side with both legs bent at a 90-degree angle; extend right arm on the floor, straight overhead; Place left hand behind the head and point elbow toward the ceiling; Slowly lift the rib cage toward the hip without pressing on the floor with the right arm; Do one set of reps and repeat on the other side.

    2. Hyperextensions (10 reps): Lie face down on a bench with a weight (or partner) stabilizing your ankles, and your torso draped over an edge of the bench so that your head is near the floor. With hands on sides of head slowly raise torso to horizontal position. Slowly lower torso back down. Keep head, shoulders and upper back arched. throughout movement.)

    3. Leg Hugs (10 reps): Lie face up with arms and legs extended. Raise upper back while bringing knees toward the head, Grab knees and clutch them, pulling the body into a position comparable to a ball. Hold briefly. Release hold, and slowly return to starting position.

    4. Russian Twist (20 reps): Lie face up on the floor with fingers clenched behind the head; Bend the knees slightly while keeping feet flat on the floor; Slowly raise shoulders off the ground for a few inches and slowly twist the torso from side to side (you should be turning your right elbow toward the left knee and the left elbow toward the right knee); Return the head to the ground and repeat.

    5. Hip Curls (14 reps): Lie face up on a bench with hands behind head and clutching the edge of the bench; Place feet straight out so body is in a prone position; Raise legs by flexing the hips and knees until the thighs are just past perpendicular to the torso; Return legs away from the body until hips and knees are extended. Repeat motion.

    6. Jack Knifes (10 reps): Lie face up on the floor with arms straight out (on the floor) reaching away from the body; Straighten the legs and keep toes pointed upwards so entire body is resting on the floor; Raise the shoulders in an attempt to touch the toes while simultaneously lifting the buttocks slightly off the floor; As you lower the shoulders to the floor, drop the legs to the floor at the same time; Repeat the motion as soon as the arms and the legs reach the floor.

    7. Reverse trunk twists (20 reps): Lie face up with legs extended and arms straight out at sides. Raise legs perpendicular to floor. Slowly lower feet to right side (feet together, legs straight, muscles tight) until feet are a few inches from the floor. Return to starting position and repeat to left side. One motion to teach side is a rep.

    8. Abdominal Crunches (20 reps): Lie face up on the floor with fingers clenched behind the head; Bend the knees slightly while keeping feet flat on the floor; Slowly allow shoulders to raise a few inches off the floor without using the back or pulling on the head with your hands; Return head to the floor and repeat.

    9. Jack Knifes (10 reps): Follow previous instructions.

    10. Sit-ups with weight on chest (16 reps): Lie face up on the floor with knees slightly bent and hands clenched around weight on the chest; Raise shoulders upward towards the knees while reaching as far as possible; Pause briefly and lower body to starting position: Repeat.

    11. Abdominal Crunches (15 reps): Follow previous instructions.

    12. Jack Knifes (10 reps): Follow previous instructions.

    13. Twisted sit-ups (16 reps): Lie face up, fingers interlocked behind the head. Bring knees toward chest and lift shoulder blades. Straighten left leg to 45 degrees while bringing left elbow toward right knee; Switch sides, bringing right elbow toward left knee. Alternate in a pedaling motion, as if riding a bicycle.

    14. Abdominal Crunches (12 reps): Follow previous instructions.

    15. Fixed Feet, Twisted Sit-ups (20 reps): Sit down in the sit-up position (fingers laced behind the head and knees slightly bent); Slowly raise the shoulders a few inches off the ground and twist the upper body to the right (you should be trying to touch the left elbow to the right knee); Pause briefly and lower the body back to the starting position; Slowly raise shoulders a few inches off the ground and twist upper body to the left (the right elbow should be trying to touch the left knee this time); Pause briefly and lower the body back to the starting position; Repeat movement and consider one movement to the left and one movement to the right to be one complete set.

    16. Abdominal Crunches (10 reps): Follow previous instructions.

    17. Jack Knifes (12 reps): Follow previous instructions.
